Medical Transportation Assistance โ€“ Chesed Rides to Hospitals & Appointments

Helping patients and families get to the care they need, when they have no way to get there on their own.

What Is the Transportation Program?

Chesed 24/7โ€™s transportation program provides two types of services for patients and families:

โ€

Hospital Shuttle: Chesed 24/7โ€™s transportation program provides medical transportation assistance and rides for patients and families who need help getting to and from hospitals, treatments, and medical appointments. This service follows set routes to major facilities to ensure patients can reach their appointments reliably.

โ€

Shvil Hachesed: A unique program offering handicap-accessible vehicles for individuals to borrow. These vehicles are available without a driver, providing more flexibility for those who need transportation but can drive themselves or have a caregiver assist them.

Why Medical Transportation Assistance Matters

Many patients cannot get to their appointments

โ€

Illness, post-surgery limitations, or logistical challenges can prevent patients from getting the care they need.

โ€

Public transportation is not always realistic

โ€

Buses, trains, and long walks are challengingโ€”or impossibleโ€”for the elderly, people with mobility issues or medical concerns.

โ€

Rideshare and taxis are expensive

โ€

Multiple trips each week quickly add up. For families already under financial pressure, this can be a crushing extra burden.

โ€

Chesed rides remove one huge source of stress

โ€

Chesed rides reduce stress by ensuring dependable transportation when itโ€™s needed most.

What the Transportation Program Provides

Chesed 24/7โ€™s medical transportation assistance includes rides or van access for individuals who need:

โ€

  • Rides to hospitals for surgery, tests, consultations, and admissions
  • Transportation to recurring treatments, such as chemo, radiation, or dialysis
  • Rides home after discharge, when families cannot pick up the patient
  • Rides for family members to visit a seriously ill loved one when necessary

โ€

Whenever possible, rides are:

  • Door-to-door
  • Scheduled with sensitivity to appointment times
  • Coordinated to match patient needs and physical condition

โ€

Availability depends on volunteers, distance, and time of day, but the goal is always: no one should miss care because they canโ€™t get there.

How to Request Medical Transportation Assistance

To request a Chesed ride for a medical appointment or hospital visit, choose from the following options:

โ€

  1. For the daily Hospital Shuttle:
    Phone: 845-354-3233
The more notice you can give, the easier it is to schedule.โ€
  2. โ€For the Shvil Hachesed (handicap-accessible vans):
    Phone: 845-354-3300
Please note that van availability depends on demand, so earlier requests are encouraged.

How Your Donation Supports the Transportation Program

Every chesed ride requires:

โ€

  • Fuel and vehicle costs
  • Insurance and safety considerations
  • Coordination time
  • Volunteer support and scheduling systems
  • Sometimes subsidizing rides when volunteer coverage isnโ€™t available

โ€

Your donation helps:

โ€

  • Ensure patients never miss critical care due to lack of a ride
  • Relieve families from the stress of arranging and paying for transport
  • Expand hospital transportation for Jewish patients to more areas

โ€

Knowing the ride was arranged let me focus on my child, not on traffic or subway stairs.

The Stern Family

We donโ€™t drive, and my father needed daily treatments for a week. The rides gave us back our sanity.

The Katz Family

I had no way to get to chemo. The Chesed ride came to my door, took me to the hospital, and brought me back home. I donโ€™t know what I would have done without it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sponsor rides for a specific patient or hospital?

Often yesโ€”many donors sponsor chesed rides in honor or memory of someone.

Can I request a ride for non-medical errands?

This program is reserved for medical appointments and hospital-related needs.

Can you provide recurring rides (e.g., chemo 3x/week)?

Yes, when possible. Recurring medical appointment transport is prioritized for patients undergoing ongoing treatment.

How far in advance should I request a ride?

The more notice, the betterโ€”especially for early-morning or long-distance appointments.

Are drivers professionals?

Most are volunteers. When volunteers are not available or appropriate, Chesed 24/7 may explore alternate options based on funding and urgency.

Is there a charge for rides?

No. Rides arranged through the program are provided as a chesed, thanks to donors and volunteers.
