Our History

1984

Organization Founded

Rabbi Shulem Pesach & Chavie Greenberg begin sending meals to new mothers (kimpatorins) in New Square. This grassroots meal service becomes the foundation of Chesed 24/7.

1993

First Chesed Room at Good Samaritan Hospital

Our legendary chesed rooms in 24 hospitals are "home in the hospital" for patients and family members. Fully stocked refrigerators, hot coffee, meals, snacks, reading material, and so much more.

1996

1996

Launch of Medical Supplies Division

Wheelchairs to hospital beds, crutches to specialty care items, our Medical Equipment Loan Center is fully stocked with anything a patient needs for short or long term.

1998

1998

First Chesed Room at Columbia University Medical Center

Recognizing the growing need in New York City’s major medical centers, we expanded into Columbia University Medical Center, bringing comfort, care, and support to patients far from home.

1999

1999

Creation of Daily Hospital Shuttles

To relieve the financial and emotional burden of traveling for care, Chesed 24/7 launched daily shuttles running between Rockland County and Manhattan hospitals. These routes operate several times a day, providing patients stress-free, cost-free transportation to appointments and treatments.

2000

2000

Expansion to Hospitals Across New York and New Jersey

Our network of Chesed Rooms continued to grow, extending across hospitals throughout New York and New Jersey to meet the needs of more patients than ever before.

Special Production of Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranate juice is known for its healing qualities, especially for cancer patients. What began in a small basement in New Square has grown into a large-scale annual production of juice from 50,000 pomegranates to thousands of grateful patients around the country.

2011

2011

Launch of “Shabbos in a Box” Project

Chesed 24/7 is dedicated to ease the challenges patients face in the hospital during Shabbos and Yom Tov. This beautifully-designed box transforms the environment with hospital-approved candles, grape juice, Kiddush cup, and more, creating a more dignified and peaceful Shabbos and Yom Tov experience.

2012

2012

Launch of Chesed Apartments

Patients need their loved ones at their side - especially on Shabbos. Chesed 24/7's comfortable apartments allow family members to stay in the area when going home for the night is not an option.

2013

2013

Establishment of Jewish Hospital Liaison Program

Chesed 24/7 has a team of dedicated Liaisons who offer crucial support to patients in hospital settings. Whether it's communicating with doctors, arranging care, or explaining treatment plans, our hospital liaisons help patients navigate the hospital system and get the best possible care.

2018

2018

Expansion to Commercial Kitchen

To supply our Chesed Rooms with fresh, high-quality food, volunteers prepare fruits, vegetables, sandwiches, baked goods, potato knishes, ziti, and more in our commercial kitchen. Every item is made with care and delivered directly to hospital families.

Opening of first Chesed room in Israel, located in Ziv Hospital in Tzfas

Located in Ziv Hospital in Tzfas, this chesed room was inspired by a New York patient who experienced an emergency in Israel and saw the need firsthand. Today, it serves as a haven of hospitality and comfort for families who previously had no such resource during medical crises.
